Wood Floor Staining
Change the colour of your wooden floor with stains tested on your own timber before we commit.
Colour makes a big difference to how a wooden floor feels. A darker tone adds warmth and drama, a pale or grey stain makes a space feel brighter and more modern.
Staining is carried out after sanding, as part of our floor sanding service. The stain goes onto clean, bare timber and is then sealed with protective coats.
Samples on your own floor
The same stain can look very different on pine, oak and other timbers. We apply several test patches to a discreet area so you can see the real colour in your own light. Our guide to choosing a floor stain colour has more tips.
Colours we often use
Natural and invisible oils that keep a raw-wood look
Light oak and honey shades
Rich walnut and smoked oak
Soft greys and white-wash
Ebony and near-black
Floors that suit staining
Most solid, parquet and engineered floors take stain well. Original pine boards from a floorboards restoration look superb in darker tones. Herringbone and block floors from our parquet floor sanding service can also be stained.
How we stain a floor
After sanding, we raise and cut back the grain so the stain absorbs evenly across the whole floor. We apply the colour in sections and work it in to avoid streaks and overlaps. Once dry, it is sealed with two or three coats of oil or lacquer. Oil-based colour products are also available, combining stain and finish in one.
Because stain must go on bare wood, it is best done alongside sanding. It typically adds half a day to a day to the project. Darker colours show dust and scratches more than mid-tones, so we will talk through what suits your lifestyle.
Aftercare for stained floors
Day-to-day care is simple — regular vacuuming and a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Felt pads under furniture help prevent scratches showing through the colour. Oiled and stained floors can be refreshed with a re-oil when they start to look dull.
Your staining and finishing comes with our 3-month service guarantee. See our prices for staining costs.

Questions about wood floor staining
Do you offer floor staining?
Yes. After sanding we apply test patches on your timber so you can see how each shade looks in the room before we commit. Find out more about wood floor staining.
How should I clean an oiled floor?
Vacuum or sweep regularly and mop with a damp, well-wrung mop and a pH-neutral wood soap. Avoid steam mops and bleach or multi-surface sprays. Read our care guide for a simple routine.
What do you need from us on the day?
We need access to a standard power socket and, ideally, parking near the property. Our machines run on domestic power, and we bring everything else with us.
How are your prices worked out?
Prices depend on the floor area, condition, repairs needed and the finish you choose. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and we confirm everything with a fixed written quote.
How should I prepare the room?
Empty the room where possible and take down curtains that reach the floor. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our guide to preparing your home has more tips.
Will the stain look like the sample card?
Oak, pine and other woods all react to stain in their own way. Sample cards are only a rough guide, so testing on the sanded floor is the only reliable way to choose.
What our customers say
Honest advice — no unnecessary work
“I asked for a full sand, but after looking at the floor they said a fresh coat of lacquer would do. Half the price and the floor looks like new. Rare honesty.”

“Clear quote with no surprises. They explained the oil options without any pressure and the colour sample matched what we wanted perfectly.”

Great advice on staining
“I had picked a colour from a brochure, but on our pine it would have looked almost black. The samples showed us a better option and the floor looks brilliant.”
